To provide leadership for the further development of an environment in South Australia that promotes engagement for all in active and healthy living
ACHPER (SA) is a non profit association that believes an educated nation comprising active and healthy people is the best investment for the future. ACHPER (SA) caters for students and professionals in a wide range of areas-specifically the Health and Physical Education Learning area. ACHPER (SA) is concerned with the provision and quality of physical activity, recreation, personal development, health promotion and education in all education institutions from pre-primary through to the tertiary sector. ACHPER (SA) allows the opportunity for people in various interest areas to meet, share ideas, network and develop relationships. ACHPER membership offers many benefits to individuals in addition to joining a dedicated group of professionals and being part of an active and committed organisation.
ACHPER has 2 main areas of focus- Physical Education and Sport and Health Education:
ACHPER (SA) aims to promote health and physical education in schools and educational settings through the provision of a variety of practical professional learning activities targeted at HPE educators and professionals and HPE students. Provision of these opportunities supports the HPE industry by extending new offerings and methods for delivering and executing theoretical and practical components of Health and Physical education and facilitates networking among industry professionals.
ACHPER provides up to date information on strategies, research, policy information and projects aimed at creating community awareness about a healthy lifestyle. Useful resources are a major part of membership. These resources include ACHPER Matters, a publication that covers our focus areas, The ACHPERTISER-State newsletter which updates ACHPER (SA) activities, and a National Publication (either the Healthy Lifestyles Journal or the Active & Healthy Magazine).
ACHPER (SA) has a dedicated and enthusiastic Board of Volunteers that oversee operations. Combined with a hard working office staff, ACHPER continues to grow professionally as an organisation. There is a variety of resources available from the ACHPER (SA) office that are targeted at both primary and secondary teachers:
Play with Purpose: For Fundamental Movement Skills Teaching: This resource was developed to support educators in planning, delivering and assessing early childhood Fundamental Movement Skills (FMS). This resource has been designed to enable all students to develop and refine their FMS. Photos, illustrations, and observation checklists are featured to support the development and achievement of these important skills.
Active Children: Ideas for enhancing physical activity in primary schools: This innovative resource is a collection of games - indoor, outdoor, field, target, and court games, and other ideas for physical activity. The games and activities offer diverse and dynamic experiences that will supplement school physical education programs and maximise participation and learning.
ACHPER (SA) coordinates a range of dynamic and relevant Professional Learning activities. Members receive up to 50% off the price of all ACHPER (SA) activities. These activities include State Conferences, Seminars, and regular Training and Development Activities.
Major annual events include- the ACHPER (SA) State Health & PE Conference (April school holidays each year), ACHPER Secondary Conference (December each year-week 9), ACHPER (SA) Primary Years Conference (September each year), Early Years Conference (Term 1), Early Career Teacher Mentoring Program-(April-ongoing each year), Leadership Seminar for HPE Coordinators and other ongoing opportunities including PlayTime (Early Childhood sessions). ACHPER (SA) also coordinate regional seminars, and other after school training and development opportunities. ACHPER (SA) runs a consultancy service where experienced educators can run specific professional learning support for schools/organisations.
In addition to the range of Professional Learning activities, ACHPER (SA) coordinate ACHPER also runs active programs for schools.
be active Physical Education Week is held annually in week 5 term 4. Stay tuned for the comprehensive program and resources to highlight programs in your school for this popular week. Metropolitan activities are coordinated offering opportunities for students to undertake a range of activities. The popular Physical Education Week Dinner is held each year and features the presentation of Awards for successful schools, educators and volunteers.
ACHPER (SA) owns the be active Corporate Cup, and Life. be in it. continue to coordinate, promote and manage the event. The annual Corporate Cup (August-November) welcomes school and community teams to either walk or run a range of distances in a range of 4 locations over a series of fortnights.
ACHPER (SA)- with the support of Credit Union SA annually present the Excellence in Health and Physical Education Awards. These awards recognize and reward a South Australian primary school (the Norma Jenner Memorial Award) and secondary school (the Howard Mutton Memorial Award) that has developed best practice models in the delivery of health and physical education programmes for its students and these are reflected in the policies, practices and other supportive/innovative strategies in the school.
ACHPER (SA) also offer awards as part of the popular Physical Education Week for schools, educators and volunteers that are presented at the annual Physical Education Week Dinner each year (November). These awards are called as part of the Physical Education Week booklet.
The ACHPER (SA) Annual General Meeting also recognizes an annual Presidents Award, and present Membership Milestone certificates.
