Mission:

The Australian Society for Music Education [ASME] was established in 1967, following discussions between interstate representatives after the successful UNESCO Conference on Music Education held in Sydney during May, 1965. The Society is organised in State Chapters, with a National Executive and National Council in which all States and Territories are represented.

ASME exists to:

- Support the right of every person to a musical education,

- Promote quality music education,

- Assist music educators to develop and extend their professional

awareness,

- Maintain and develop the status of the music teaching profession,

- Provide a forum for the exchange of ideas,

- Encourage Australian music and composers, and

- Develop teaching methods relevant to Australian students.

These aims are implemented by means of publications such as the Australian Journal of Music Education and organisation of conferences, seminars, workshops and lectures at both State and National levels.

The South Australian chapter of ASME seeks to further the aims and objectives of ASME within South Australia in the following ways:

- Organising regular conferences and workshops in response to perceived needs of local music educators. In recent years, the SA chapter has usually organised a half day Saturday conference or workshop approximately once per school term. These events provide excellent opportunities for networking with other music educators.

- Providing a Newsletter every term. The SA Newsletters provide information about past and upcoming events, along with various reports and issues of current relevance.

- Organising the SA Young Composers Awards

- Publishing music teaching resources written by teachers

- Being a strong advocate for music education with various authorities (including DECS, SSABSA, AMEB etc.)

- Collaborating with other music education organisations

ASME SA participates in a wide range of activities including:

- Advocacy

- Communications

- Policy Development

- Professional Development

- Publications

- Research
