John Hartley

John Hartley was a former Prince Alfred College headmaster and the first Inspector General of the Education Department of SA. He led the way for 20 years from 1875 until there was an unfortunate collision between his bicycle and a horse while he was returning home from work. The funeral procession was one of the largest SA had ever seen, a mark of respect for an inspiring leader who contributed enormously to the birth of public education in this state.
