Registration in SA

The vision of The Teachers Registration Board of South Australia is ‘To lead and support the professionalism of Teachers’. It was first established under part 4 of the Education Act of 1972 then under the Teachers Registration and Standards Act of 2004. The board is an independent Statutory Authority and is funded solely by the fees paid by registered teachers. The values of The Board are:

  • Integrity – to seek procedural fairness; natural justice; honesty and accountability
  • Respect – to promote courtesy and dignity; diversity; and consultation and collaboration
  • Responsibility – to act with ethical decision making; confidentiality and privacy; and responsiveness to change.

Teacher Registration in South Australia is for a period of three years and renewal of registration is required to continue teaching. Failure to renew registration also results in a heavy fine.

Teacher graduates lodge their application for Teacher Registration when they are due to complete their approved Australian teacher education program. They need to provide certified supporting documents and a certified copy of a certificate of completion of the Responding to Abuse and Neglect: Education and Care Training course. This is a 7-hour course that must be completed in South Australia. An applicant must also consent to a National Criminal History Record Check, provide the necessary academic records and pay the registration fee. Registration is only finalised when all the required documents and academic transcripts have been received.

Applicants holding overseas qualifications apply for an Assessment of Qualifications to determine if they meet the minimum prescribed qualifications. They will then be notified by the Teachers Registration Board and if successful will go through the same process as graduating or continuing teachers.
